Air Fryer Plantains with a Lemon Kiss

Sweet, caramelized plantains with a light, zesty finish.

Golden, air-fried plantains are one of my favorite quick sides — a beautiful blend of Caribbean comfort and West African sweetness. This version stays simple: no deep frying, just a little avocado oil, a touch of heat, and a bright squeeze of lemon at the end to make the flavors pop.

Perfect with braised meats, rice bowls, or as a snack straight off the tray.

Ingredients (Serves 2–3)

  • 2 ripe plantains (yellow with black speckles)
  • Avocado oil spray (or 1–2 tsp avocado oil)
  • Salt, to taste (optional)
  • Fresh lemon juice (about ½ lemon)

Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Plantains

Peel the plantains and slice them into ½-inch rounds or diagonal slices for more surface area. Lightly spray or brush them with avocado oil. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt.

Step 2: Air Fry

Preheat your air fryer to 380°F.
Arrange the plantain slices in a single layer, making sure they don’t overlap.
Air fry for 12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the edges are golden and the centers are soft and lightly caramelized.

Step 3: Finish with Lemon

Once the plantains come out hot and tender, squeeze fresh lemon juice over the top. Just a light drizzle — enough to brighten the sweetness without overpowering it.
